Your FAQs

Here we answer the most frequently asked questions about KIWI products.

General questions

What is KIWI?

KIWI is the secure, keyless door entry system for apartment buildings. The real estate industry and service providers, such as mail companies and garbage collectors, can render their services more efficiently with KIWI and the residents enjoy simple and secure access to the building – with the transponder or the KIWI App.

Security and privacy

Where does KIWI come from?

KIWI is a service provided by KIWI.KI GmbH. The Berlin-based company currently employs more than 40 people. KIWI is 100 percent made in Germany. Some of the system components are manufactured in Berlin, others in southern Germany.

Where are the KIWI servers located?

The KIWI servers are located in Germany.

What is done with the usage data?

Data economy and the protection of privacy are KIWI’s top priority. We do not create any usage profiles. KIWI has been developed under the premise that at no time is it possible to ascertain who has opened a certain door at a certain time using a KIWI Transponder. All KIWI customer data is stored on KIWI servers in Germany. We do not pass on customer data to third parties.

How secure is KIWI?

KIWI has already been tested many times by globally recognized organizations during the development phase and rated as very good. KIWI’s security standards are much higher than those of comparable technologies. Communication between the KIWI Transponder and the KIWI door sensor takes place on the basis of encrypted random numbers. With this process, for which a patent is pending, it is impossible to copy or identify a KIWI Transponder purely by “listening”.

For the KIWI Website, KIWI Portal, My KIWI and the API, connections from the client to our servers are encrypted with SSL. The portal does not use ActiveX or Flash.

General questions

How does KIWI Smart Entry work?

The small KIWI Transponder remains conveniently in your pocket when opening the door. Its counterpart – the KIWI door sensor – is located behind the bell panel of the front entrance door. As you approach the door at a distance of between one and three meters, the KIWI door sensor recognizes the KIWI Transponder with the access rights for the door before unlocking it by automatically activating the electronic strike. The door can then simply be pushed open. With the KIWI App you can also open the door with a click.

Who uses it?

KIWI is aimed at the real estate industry, service providers who need access to apartment buildings – such as mail companies and garbage collectors – and residents. Ambulance services and fire departments also benefit from the innovative technology by gaining immediate access to the apartment building in the event of an emergency.

Do I have to choose between KIWI and my conventional key?

No, the existing door lock remains unaffected. You can also continue to use your regular key. The bell system also works in exactly the same way as before with KIWI.

Usage requirements

How do I find out whether KIWI Smart Entry is already available in my apartment building and whether I can use it immediately without having to wait?

Simply send an e-mail to [email protected], writing “Is KIWI available?” in the subject line and stating your address. We will respond to your inquiry as quickly as possible and tell you how to proceed further.

How can I install KIWI in my property?

Simply order KIWI Smart Entry online here.

Technical questions

What is the time-out function?

For security reasons, the time-out function ensures that the front entrance door only remains unlocked for 30 seconds when someone is standing in the Ki zone at a distance of between one and three meters from the door. If you happen to remain by the door for longer than 30 seconds, the time-out function may prevent the door from opening. Simply leave the Ki zone briefly and approach the door again.

When does the electronic strike emit a loud signal and when does it emit a quiet one?

The KIWI standard installation is a quiet installation. This means that you will only hear a quiet click when you approach the door with your KIWI Transponder. This click is often masked by the city noise. When using it with a smartphone, there is typically a loud, buzzing sound. It has been deliberately set up like this, because an acoustic signal is helpful when opening the door with a smartphone. In exceptional cases this kind of installation cannot be selected, which means that there will be a loud signal even when using it with the KIWI Transponder.

Troubleshooting

The front entrance door won’t open. What now?

The problem may be caused by the time-out function. Also make sure that the KIWI Transponder is not being held tightly in the hand and is not being kept behind metal objects – this can prevent authentication between the KIWI Transponder and the KIWI door sensor. If you have eliminated these reasons as possible causes and the door still doesn’t open, contact our KIWI service team and we will rectify the problem as quickly as possible.

General questions

How does it differ from KIWI Smart Entry?

KIWI supplies housing cooperatives with a complete solution for access to the entire property. This comprises KIWI Smart Entry, the KIWI Smart Lock, and the KIWI Portal. While KIWI Smart Entry is the access system designed for front entrance doors, the KIWI Smart Lock is installed in all internal doors, including apartment, basement, and maintenance room doors.

General questions

How does the KIWI Knob work?

The KIWI Knob is an electronic door lock manufactured by Uhlmann & Zacher and consists of the mechanical door knob on the inside, the electronic door knob on the outside, and the KIWI Door Hub. In its deactivated state the electronic door knob is disengaged. Even though it can be turned, the door cannot be opened. If it is activated by the KIWI Klick or KIWI App, it engages and the door can be opened by turning the knob. The KIWI Knob will briefly flash if it has been activated.

Does the KIWI Knob also provide contactless entry?

The KIWI Knob has been designed in a way that permits both contactless and manual operation. When installing it in an apartment door, however, we recommend using only manual operation of the KIWI Knob. If you are fitting it to a cycle room door, for instance, you can also opt for contactless operation. For further details on this, please get in touch with the KIWI service team.

Are there any special instructions to bear in mind when using the KIWI Knob?

Please ensure that you only use the KIWI Knob for locking and unlocking the door when the door is closed. Avoid opening and closing the door by gripping the KIWI Knob. Please use the existing door handle or door knob to open and close the door.

Will conventional metal keys still work?

Unlike KIWI Smart Entry, the KIWI Knob does not work alongside the conventional key. The KIWI Handle works without an electronic door knob and alongside the conventional key. You can find further information on the KIWI Handle here.

Can I always get out from the inside, even if the door is locked?

It goes without saying that you can unlock and open the door from the inside at any time. This is also possible in the event of a power outage.

What batteries does the KIWI Knob take?

The KIWI Knob takes two CR2 lithium 3 V batteries. These are included and already fitted in the electronic door knob when purchased.
When you need new batteries, they can be ordered directly from us at a cost of €29 by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

How long should the batteries last?

The electronic door knob can be operated up to 74,000 times with the supplied set of batteries. This is equivalent to around seven years’ use. When the batteries are running low, the final 1,000 operations will be accompanied by an acoustic signal. It is possible to change the batteries while the KIWI Knob is installed. The user can change the batteries by themselves or they can ask KIWI to do it for them at a cost of €59.

How much electricity does the KIWI Door Hub consume?

The KIWI Door Hub consumes just 9 kWh per year. At a cost of approximately 30 cents per kilowatt hour, this works out at €2.70 annually.

Can I also fit the KIWI Knob in external doors?

The KIWI Knob outdoor is available for external doors. This has a weather-resistant door knob that works in temperatures as low as -25°C. The KIWI Knob outdoor is available from us for €699.

Can I also use the KIWI Knob with the KIWI App?

Of course. The KIWI Knob can be used with all KIWI applications.

Why have I also been sent two white cards? What do they have to do with KIWI?

The white KIWI door card allows you to open the door in the event of a power outage by approaching the electronic door knob. Both KIWI door cards are blank for security reasons.

Usage requirements

Can the KIWI Knob be installed in any door?

The door must not have any protection against drilling or core extraction.

There must be a power socket no more than three meters away from the door.

When placing an order, KIWI requires the dimensions of the door’s existing lock cylinder. You can find instructions on how to measure the dimensions of the lock cylinder here.

Is it possible to install the KIWI Knob in all lock cylinders?

Yes, it is possible to install the KIWI Knob in all commonly available lock cylinders. However, the lock cylinder must be between 30/30 and 70/70 mm in size, with measurements always taken in 5 mm increments.

How can I order the KIWI Knob?

Simply order KIWI online here.

Technical questions

Initial setup

Who will install the KIWI Knob?

You can install the KIWI Knob by yourself in less than 15 minutes. Simply follow the installation instructions enclosed with the KIWI Knob. Once you have installed it, please contact KIWI so that the registration process can be completed.

Can I also remove the KIWI Knob and install it in a different door?

Yes, with the installation card you can remove the KIWI Knob without trace and install it in a different door. Once you have moved it to the new location, please contact the KIWI customer service team to verify that everything is working correctly.

What must I do if I move or wish to use the KIWI Knob on a different door?

Firstly, you must once again ensure that the door meets the fitting requirements for the KIWI Knob and measure the length of the profile cylinder. If the dimensions are the same as those of the previous profile cylinder, you can simply install your KIWI Knob in the new door. If not, you need a new profile cylinder with the correct dimensions. You can order these from us at a cost of €49. Simply send an e-mail with the dimensions to [email protected].

Once you have moved it to the new location, please contact the KIWI customer service team to verify that everything is working correctly.

Troubleshooting

The KIWI Knob won’t open. What now?

If the KIWI Knob doesn’t react to the KIWI Transponder or the KIWI App, you have the option to activate the KIWI Knob with the KIWI door card. This also works in the event of a power outage or if the KIWI Door Hub is unplugged.

It may also be that the electronic door knob doesn’t react because it is in rest mode. Here it can help to move the knob briefly and then try to open the door again with the KIWI Klick, the KIWI App, or the KIWI door card.

What happens if the door cannot be opened with the KIWI door card either?

You can call a locksmith. Allianz will cover the cost of the locksmith. Call the Allianz hotline on 008 00 11 22 33 44 and quote the following number: AS-1416234869. It is also important to inform Allianz that you are a KIWI customer. The locksmith must drill out the lock and fit a mechanical lock cylinder on an interim basis.

Security and privacy

As the owner of the building, can the landlord gain access to the tenant’s apartment using the KIWI Knob?

No, the KIWI Knob is only managed by one party. When the apartment is rented, the management passes over to the tenant; the landlord loses their access rights.

How secure is the KIWI Knob?

The KIWI Knob is absolutely secure and meets the highest security standards, just like all of the other KIWI products. As ever, the software is made by KIWI and the hardware comes from Uhlmann & Zacher. This has been patented since 1999 and on the market since 2004. Some of Uhlmann & Zacher’s reference customers in Berlin include the Free University of Berlin with 7,000 knobs, the Charité with 1,000 knobs (with more currently being fitted), and the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

What happens if I lose a service card?

Please immediately contact the KIWI customer service team. Tel.: +49-30-609-838-333.

Is the KIWI Knob certified?

Yes, just like all of the KIWI products, it goes without saying that the KIWI Knob meets the highest security standards and complies with the following standards:

DIN EN 60529:2014, DIN EN 179:2008, DIN EN 1125:2008, DIN EN 15684:2013, DIN EN 300 330-1 V1.7.1 EMV, DIN EN 300 330-2 V1.5.1 EMV, DIN EN 61000-6-1:2007 EMV, DIN EN 61000-6-3:2007 EMV, RL 1999/5/EG

Is my home contents insurance also valid with the KIWI Knob?

Frank Manekeller, head of third-party, accident, and property insurance at HDI Versicherung AG, explains that an apartment door can be locked with both a smart lock and a classic lock cylinder. The following applies to both solutions: Tested and certified systems (e.g. by VdS) offer better protection. In the event of a claim, the break-in must be proved by the customer (e.g. through signs of forced entry). We recommend checking your own insurance policies. This means that it makes no difference whether a conventional or electronic lock is used on the door.

General questions

How does the KIWI Handle work?

The KIWI Handle is fitted with a self-locking mortise lock with anti-panic function. The handle will only open from the outside if it has been activated beforehand by an authorized KIWI Transponder or via the KIWI App. The door works from the inside at all times without the need for prior activation.

What is the anti-panic function?

The anti-panic function means that the door or lock can be opened mechanically from the inside at all times by using the handle, even when it is locked.

Can I always get out from the inside – even in an emergency?

Yes, this is guaranteed by the mortise lock’s anti-panic function.

What is a self-locking mortise lock?

The mortise lock’s self-locking function ensures that the door automatically locks as soon as it clicks into the lock. Accordingly, there is no longer any need to actively lock the door.

Will conventional metal keys still work?

Yes, conventional metal keys can still be used alongside the KIWI Handle. The profile cylinder doesn’t have to be replaced when installing the KIWI Handle.

Can I also use the KIWI Handle with the KIWI App or the KIWI Portal

Of course. The KIWI Handle can be used with all KIWI applications.

Does the KIWI Handle also provide contactless entry in the same way as KIWI Smart Entry?

The KIWI Handle has been designed in a way that permits both contactless and manual operation. When installing it in an apartment door, however, we recommend using only manual operation of the KIWI Handle. If you are fitting it to a cycle room door, for instance, you can also opt for contactless operation. For further details on this, please get in touch with the KIWI customer service team.

Can I always get out from the inside, even if the door is locked?

It goes without saying that you can unlock and open the door from the inside at any time. This is also possible in the event of a power outage. Thanks to the anti-panic function, the door can even be opened from the inside at any time when it is locked.

What batteries does the KIWI Handle take?

It takes one CR123A 3 V battery.

How long should the battery last?

The KIWI Handle can be operated up to 130,000 times with the supplied battery. This is equivalent to around ten years’ use. When the battery is running low, the final 1,000 operations will be accompanied by an acoustic signal. It is possible to change the battery while the KIWI Handle is installed. The operating instructions for your KIWI Handle show you how to change the battery.

How much electricity does the KIWI Door Hub consume?

The KIWI Door Hub consumes just 9 kWh per year. At a cost of approximately 30 cents per kilowatt hour, this works out at €2.70 annually.

Usage requirements

For what kind of doors is the KIWI Handle suitable?

The KIWI Handle is essentially suitable for any door that meets the installation requirements. This solution is especially suitable for apartment doors, basement doors, technical rooms, and doors to shared spaces.

What are the requirements for the installation of the KIWI Handle?

• There must be a power socket no more than three meters away from the door.
• No slanting faceplate – this may be the case on some doors in old buildings.
KIWI requires the following information when placing your order:
• Door thickness (without handle)
• Door thickness (with handle)
• Cylinder length (inside and outside dimensions). You will find a guide for measuring the lock cylinder here.
• Position of the handle (viewed from the outside): left or right
• Photos of the current lock

How can I order the KIWI Handle?

Simply order KIWI online here.

Technical questions

Initial setup

Who will install the KIWI Handle?

An appointment will be made for the KIWI Handle to be installed by a KIWI-approved fitter before it is handed over to the customer.

Can I also remove the KIWI Handle and install it in a different door?

It is essentially possible to remove the KIWI Handle at any time. However, it should only be refitted by a KIWI-approved specialist. You can remove the KIWI Handle by yourself.

The KIWI Handle can only be removed without trace if the existing drill holes in the door are suitable for fitting the KIWI door handle. In order to ensure that the old door handle can be reused after the KIWI Handle has been removed, any holes that need to be drilled to fit the KIWI door handle should only be drilled within the area of the cover plate for the original door handle.

We will be happy to assist you with the removal and refitting. KIWI will not cover the removal and refitting costs.

Maintenance and service

Would you like to make use of other KIWI services?

We will be happy to assist you with the removal and refitting of the KIWI Handle (subject to a charge). You are welcome to contact our service team in this regard.

Do you have any other questions or require any assistance?

If so, you can contact our KIWI service team anytime by calling +49-30-609-838-333 or sending an e-mail to [email protected].

It may also be that the KIWI Handle doesn’t react because it is in rest mode. Here it can help to move the handle briefly and then try to open the door again with the KIWI Klick or the KIWI App.

What happens if the door also won’t open with the key or cannot be opened for other reasons?

You can call a locksmith. Allianz will cover the cost of the locksmith. Call the Allianz hotline on 008 00 11 22 33 44 and quote the following number: AS-1416234869. It is also important to inform Allianz that you are a KIWI customer. The locksmith must drill out the lock and fit a mechanical lock cylinder on an interim basis.

As the owner of the building, can the landlord gain access to the tenant’s apartment using the KIWI Handle?

No, the KIWI Handle is only managed by one party. When the apartment is rented, the management passes over to the tenant; the landlord loses their access rights.

Is it possible to tell who has entered a certain door at a certain time?

No. Privacy is our cornerstone. We do not store any usage profiles. We only set up user profiles. This means we know who has access to a certain door, but cannot tell how that person uses these access rights – in other words, when the door is opened.

Is my home contents insurance also valid with the KIWI Handle?

Frank Manekeller, head of third-party, accident and property insurance at HDI Versicherung AG, explains that an apartment door can be locked with both a smart lock and a classic lock cylinder. Is the KIWI Handle certified?

The KIWI Handle is certified in accordance with DIN EN 179 for fire and smoke control doors in emergency exits.

Just like all of the KIWI products, it goes without saying that the KIWI Handle meets the highest security standards and complies with the following standards:

DIN 4102-5:1997-09
DIN 4102-18:1991-03
DIN 18095-1:1988-10
DIN 18095-2:1991-03

KIWI Transponder

Does the KIWI Transponder emit any radiation?

When a KIWI Transponder is within range of a KIWI door sensor, it is active for a few milliseconds for authentication purposes. The radiation emitted is around one thousand times weaker than that emitted by a cell phone.

How wide is the activation radius of the KIWI Transponder?

An activation radius of approximately three meters is set for the KIWI Transponder with KIWI’s standard installation. This radius may be wider or narrower on some systems. Our technicians always try to set the best possible radius for each door. Based on our experience, however, we know that the ideal radius is sometimes judged by KIWI users very differently. As a reminder: When using KIWI via the KIWI App, there is no radius. It can be activated from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a smartphone signal.

The KIWI Transponder has been lost. What now?

Deactivate a lost KIWI Transponder within seconds using your KIWI App or do it over the phone with the help of the KIWI service team: +49-30-609-838-333. This will render it unusable. We will then send you a new KIWI Transponder at a cost of 19 euros. In the meantime, you can open the door using your KIWI App until the new one arrives.

KIWI Portal

How do I gain access to the KIWI Portal?

Access to the KIWI Portal is set up by KIWI. The KIWI Portal always has one administrator and can have several members who are all managers of the KIWI Portal.

How can I reset my password?

If you have forgotten your password, you can have an e-mail sent to you to reset it by clicking on the “Forgotten password” button at portal.kiwi.ki.

Can I change the names of the doors by myself?

The name of each door can only be changed by KIWI. To do this, please contact KIWI via [email protected].

How does the administrator create user-defined fields?

The administrator of the KIWI Portal can create, modify, delete, and individually name user-defined fields for the user profiles. A maximum of two user-defined fields can be created. User-defined fields will soon also be available for the door view.

How can I sort, filter, and search the entries in the door/user view?

You can go through your lists by entering the desired term – a street name, for example – in the search field.

You can also sort your entries by the desired category by clicking on it in the user or door view. If you sort by address in the door view by clicking on this field, for example, all the created street names appear sorted in order.

It will soon also be possible to filter your entries by certain categories in the user and door view. The filter function will be located directly next to the search function.

Where can I get the handbook for the KIWI Portal?

The KIWI Portal handbook is available to download free of charge. The handbook can be found in PDF format via the following link: https://portal.kiwi.ki/assets/KIWI_Portal_Handbuch.pdf

Which language options are available?

The portal language can be set to either German or English. To do this, go to the settings and select the desired language.

What is the difference between the management of online and offline users?

Online users manage their user accounts by themselves in the Web-based KIWI App “My KIWI”. Here they can register, block, and unblock KIWI Transponders as well as open doors.

Offline users are managed in the portal and can only use the KIWI Transponder given to them. It is possible to change to an online user account at a later date.

How do I manage the KIWI Transponders?

The KIWI Transponders, KIWI Ki/KIWI Klick, can be registered for all offline users and for the logged-in manager of the portal (not for any other online users in the portal).

The logged-in manager can only block and unblock their own KIWI Transponders. To block/unblock all other KIWI Transponders, please call our free service hotline on +49-30-609-838-333.

KIWI Transponders are not visible in the online user profiles. They are managed in the Web-based KIWI App “My KIWI” by the users themselves.

KIWI Transponders only work with the “guest” and “host” access right types. If you only possess admin or manager rights, your KIWI Transponder will not open the corresponding door. In order to gain access rights for this door, please assign yourself guest or host rights.

How do I manage access rights that have been granted by KIWI?

Access rights to doors that have been granted by KIWI cannot be revoked by the administrator. To do this, please call our free service hotline on +49-30-609-838-333.

You can download the KIWI App for Android and Apple devices from the Apple Store and Play Store. Find out more here.

What can I do if my doors are not displayed when I log in for the first time?

If no doors are displayed on your door overview page, please get in touch with your property manager or KIWI to verify your address.

What can I do if doors are no longer displayed?

If a door is no longer displayed on your door overview page, this may be due to one of two causes. Firstly, it is possible that your access rights for this door have expired. KIWI can also be used to grant temporary access rights.

Secondly, if you have been using KIWI in a test phase, it may be that the test phase has expired. In both cases, please get in touch with KIWI.

How can I select a door?

To select a door in the KIWI native apps, swipe left or right on the door overview page until the desired door is displayed. If you have access to more than five doors, you can click on the list symbol on the left-hand side next to the door name to switch to a list of your doors.

How can I open a door using the app?

In the KIWI native apps you can open a door by simply tapping on the green “KIWI Transponder” button on the door overview page.

How can I add a KIWI Transponder?

You can register additional transponders in your user account using the Web-based KIWI App. The URL is as follows: https://mobile.kiwi.ki/#claimKi.

How can I block a KIWI Transponder?

To block a KIWI Transponder in the native apps, click the menu button in the top right-hand corner of the screen and switch to the “My KIWI Ki” area. A list of all the KIWI Transponders registered to your account will be displayed in this area. Move the green switch on the right-hand side to block the desired KIWI Transponder. It may take a few minutes to deactivate your KIWI Transponder.

How can I reactivate a blocked KIWI Transponder?
